1913: Worst. Year. Ever. We continue to have endless wars, boom and bust economic cycles, inflation, tyranny, fascism, etc. It all really get ugly in 1913, and this design
points out why. 1) The federal reserve was created 2) The 16th amendment reinstated the federal income tax 3) the 17th amendment killed states rights with the direct election of senators and 4) President Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated. Wilson of course was the jackass who signed the federal reserve act into existence and he can directly be blamed for causing WWI and WWII (look it up!)
If you can't stand the Bush Crime Family then learn your history. 1913 was a turning point for the neocons that paved the way for America's violent empire.
Oh yeah, plus 13 is an unlucky number.

You think that allowing State legislatures to appoint Senators is a better way than allowing a popular election within the State? The 17th Amendment is a progressive victory in opening up the Senate to a public election rather than allowing Senators to be chosen behind closed doors with even more big business influence.

Back when I was a die-hard democrat "progressive" I would have agreed with you in a heart beat. Now I see that having popularly elected Senators opens up these elections to out-of-state influences and funding. At first I thought it was shady and corrupt to have a legislature pick our senator but then I realized it was no different than our senate and president choosing the supreme court justices and any other federal appointment. Essentially "we the people" had no direct influence on the selection of these office holders. When it comes to the Supreme Court everyone get's their panties in a bunch over what party controls congress, etc.
If our legislatures had this power again then we'd actually pay attention to our state elections again! Do you even know who your state Representative and senator is? How many legislators are in your state capital right now and which party control which house? I'll confess that I don't know that myself.
The 17th amendment further removed the power granted to the states in the 9th and 10th amendments and concentrated more power and influence in D.C.
Now, about the big business influence... before Lincoln and Grant there was NO SUCH THING AS A LOBBYIST! Why? Because the feds were not meddling with industries like they do today. Again, if we take away the fed's authority to regulate, subsidize, penalize and manipulate our economy then "big business" will not need a single lobbyist bribing congress-critters in D.C. Big business will now have to fend for themselves in the free market by actually providing an honest service/product to the masses.
Imagine that!
Don't forget that the progressive movement of the early 20th century was dominated by the Evangelical types that supported the Bush Crime Family and the Republican Neo-Con-Bible-thumping agenda.
