Oscars: Martin Scorsese, 0; Three 6 Mafia, 1.
Best Oscars ever!The Three 6 muthafuckin' Mafia from Memphis TN took home the Academy Award for best Original Song in a film with "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp" from "Hustle and Flow".
For anyone who grew up with Southern Hip Hop we're all too familiar with the Hypnotize Minds camp, with Project Pat's jail time, Sippin' on some Sizzzzurp, Tear the Club up Thugs, 2-way Chicks blowing up ya phone, Crunchy Blac's gangsta walk, sittin on spinnaz, and recently gettin' High, high, hiiiigh with 8 Ball, MJG, and Young Buck.
Three 6 Mafia may not be the most progressive or uplifting group in Hip Hop but they are definitely pioneers in the "independent label" business model for urban music. They're always putting out records and movies on their own terms, their own schedule, and with as much creative control as they can fight for. In a music business where the record labels "pimp" the artists, Juicy J and DJ Paul ARE the "pimps" pushing their own brand of Southern Rap.
Congrats to em! (They even beat Dolly Parton for the oscar!) Now how about more positive music? Project Pat is out of jail now, I'm sure his probation demands some community service, do it in the form of music!
Update: The Associated Press is racist again, claiming "Three 6 Mafia steals Oscar Song Award", I thought it was a fair vote by the Academy members that determines the winner. A reapeat of the Katrina coverge bias! Fuckers!
Update 2: Here is the press interview after the awards with the Three 6 Mafia. Juicy J said it best "Hip Hop is taking over!"

Why did this ignorant shit win? I see you have links to Gangstarr and Immortal Technique, you should know better. This music is the same filth pushed by BET and MTV that passes off as "Hip Hop". This is truly sad.
Yeah, I agree that Three 6 needs to step up their game and make more progressive and postive music but atleast Hip Hop is getting it's foot in the door. Of course we're going to celebrate this win! Hell yeah! Now that Mos Def is getting in more flicks, maybe with Threee 6 Mafia's win, the Mighty Mos will be allowed to pen his own original tune for a future film and we'll have him scream out "WHERE BROOKLYN?" on stage just like Juicy J shouted "TENNESEE!"...

We saw this, and my hubby was happy to see them win. His dad was signed to Warner years ago and played with P-Funk. When he left "the biz" he opened a music distribution company, and my husband worked there for over a decade, and they specialize in 12" vinyl- hip-hop, especially, and he recognized them... it was an interesting performance.
Hip Hop vinyl distribution? Tight work, when I get my next single pressed up on vinyl I'll have to send u a free to copy so you can bootleg it for gas money! ;-)

You're only 23? You're going to go far, my friend. If you send us a CD, we'll give it a listen. My father-in-law doesn't do promotion, but he does distribute. His name is Jim Callon, and he was the sound engineer for P-Funk (you can look him up on Google). The company is JDC, and they have a catalog somewhere on the net... Chris worked there til he started teaching in Watts.
My sister-in-law's band is Fredalba (fredalba.com). I think you'll like them. She's also playing with Afrobeat now.
