Hey Bush, thanks for the DEAD BODIES!

The cost of the illegal IRAQ war hits home after Hurricane Katrina

What's happening in the city of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is both depressing and heart-breaking. The Mayor said that the city is 80% underwater and its getting worse because of broken levees.

In this new article from pnionline.com, they drop more bad news, this is how the story goes (and how the Bush Crime Family is to blame... again!):

When flooding [in New Orleans] in May 1995 killed six people, Congress authorized the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, or SELA.

Yet after 2003, the flow of federal dollars toward SELA dropped to a trickle. The Army Corps of Engineers never tried to hide the fact that the spending pressures of the war in Iraq, as well as homeland security -- coming at the same time as federal tax cuts -- was the reason for the strain.

In early 2004, as the cost of the conflict in Iraq soared, President Bush proposed spending less than 20 percent of what the Corps said was needed...

The $750 million Lake Pontchartrain and Vicinity Hurricane Protection project is another major Corps project, which remains about 20% incomplete due to lack of funds... That project consists of building up levees and protection for pumping stations on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Orleans, St. Bernard, St. Charles and Jefferson parishes.

The Lake Pontchartrain project is slated to receive $3.9 million in the president's 2005 budget... [but] about $20 million is needed.

That June, with the 2004 hurricane season starting, the Corps ... begged for $2 million for urgent work that Washington was now unable to pay for. From the June 18, 2004 Times-Picayune:

"The system is in great shape, but the levees are sinking. Everything is sinking, and if we don'’t get the money fast enough to raise them, then we can'’t stay ahead of the settlement," he said. "The problem that we have isn'’t that the levee is low, but that the federal funds have dried up so that we can'’t raise them."

The levee board noted in October 2004 that the feds were also now NOT paying for a hoped-for $15 million project to better shore up the banks of Lake Pontchartrain.

The 2004 hurricane season ... was the worst in decades. In spite of that, the federal government came back this spring with the steepest reduction in hurricane- and flood-control funding for New Orleans in history.

To wrap things up, Bush lied us into an illegal war, the fucking war cost an arm and a leg, as a result New Orlean's Hurricane and Flooding emergency projects took deep cuts in federal funding, Katrina came thru and ruined everything, the levees couldnt handle the flooding, now thousands are dead or homeless, and Bush was out playing Golf in California while this was happening.

Had we NOT gone to war maybe New Orleans would have been in better shape to withstand this Hurricane. Thanks to the Bush Crime Family we will never know. We smell lower approval ratings and impeachment in the air!

Exactly! Now you're catching on.

Cant deny the rationale for war changed.

Cant deny that the cost of the war is affecting other priorities.

Cant deny that the New Orleans levees were in bad shape and unfinished from the lack of federal funds. (40 years since the last update? What a shame... too bady the Army Corp of Engineers didn't have the funds to fix that.. read the article)

Cant deny that JUST NOW the GOP chair had to openly oppologize to the NAACP for Bush's refusal to meet and the GOP's strategy to avoid black folks.

The babies are probably the Iraqi ones.

Don't know much about weather control.

But you're definately catching on. Good to see the progress!

The national geographic is a pretty liberal magazine and even they admit that the current levea system was not going to be able to handle a bigger storm. It may be the negligence of every one involved, the army corps and the federal goverment funding. We should take it as a hard lesson, plan for the worse but hope for the best.

I though we went to war for WMDs?

No it was for oil... but why is gasoline still so expensive...

NO it was for democracy... but why is it becoming an islamic theocracy...

No its was to fight terrorist over there so we wouldnt have to fight them over here... but the Israeli's and the Saudi's proved that a huge majority of the Iraqi insurgents are first time fighters, the invasion pushed them over the edge, meaning there was NO threat other than Saddam...

but, what is the noble cause again? Which one of those was pushed on the public. Which cause did congress approve the Iraqi war for that demanded such a HUGE investment in tax payer dollars?

By the way, its fine and dandy to appoint all of the black and latino folks to high positions, but its only a sharade when our own communities are being abandonded by this administration. They help a few blacks and latinos but the majority are neglected. This administration only acts for the sake of poll numbers in most matters... ask Karl Rove! Why is Bush all of the sudden going on tour again to defend the Iraqi war? Are the poll numbers scaring him?

Federal funds were still cut... Bush sed "no one could have seen this happen" when local officials had been screaming about it forever... Karl rove is initiating a campaign to blame it all on the local officials (which you are participating in)... FEMA fucked up... Bush showed up for 1 million photo-ops... and if poll numbers don't bother them then why continue to make speaches to support the war? Shouldnt the reasons be obvious? Why compare the iraq war to WWII and piss off veterans?

All of this is easily a few google searches away. The Bush Crime family is in the crapper on this one, its over. They can't be defended on this one. Check out these two videos and then justify defending the federal government's response to the tragedy. See if its easy to continue to solely blame to local officials.

So since the late 80's till 2005 there was absolutely no construction done? So some wacko environmentalist group makes a protest over 15 years ago and its got more to do with the damage than Bush cutting funds just 3 years ago? Those creepy environemntalist hippie fucks control the federal budget and the policy that diverts funds to iraq... i mean to the levees in New orleans. Those damn hippie fucks! always plotting to keep Jessie Jackson's kids eating tofu...
